Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria for the Horticultural Learnerships
- Grade 12 certificate (Achieved) or NQF Level 4
- Knowledge of Health & Safety in a horticultural environment
- Knowledge of Soil Science
- South African citizen aged between 18–35 years
- Residents of the Johannesburg regions
Key Learning Areas
1. Plant Care & Maintenance
- Soil Preparation: Identify soil types and prepare soils for planting
- Planting: Establish ornamental and herbaceous plants from containers into open ground
- Pruning: Shape ornamental shrubs, trees, and other plants
- Fertilisation: Apply fertilisers to plants, landscapes, and seedlings
- Watering: Manage irrigation systems and water landscaped areas
2. Propagation & Cultivation
- Seed & Stem Propagation: Propagate plants from seeds and stem cuttings
- Growth Media: Use appropriate growth media for plant containers
- Nursery Care: Basic identification and care of ornamental seedlings
3. Pest & Weed Control
- Weed Removal: Manual and chemical removal of weeds and alien plants
- Pest Control: Apply pest control practices, including herbicides and pesticides
4. Environmental & Safety Standards
- Health & Safety: Apply core health and safety principles in a horticultural environment
- Protection: Implement environmental protection practices
5. Technical & Physical Skills
- Tool Handling: Safe use of horticultural machinery, including mowers
- Physical Fitness: Ability to perform manual outdoor work
- Basic Literacy: Communicate, read, and write effectively
