ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – CANON COLLINS & SOL PLAATJE EDUCATIONAL PROJECT

The Canon Collins Trust has been running scholarship programmes since 1981, for students from southern African countries. The Trust has supported over 4 000 scholars, from 14 countries and today the Trust offers undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for study in South Africa, the UK, Ireland and Malawi.

Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje was a South African journalist, translator, writer, intellectual, linguist and politician. He was also a founding member and first General Secretary of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which is now the African National Congress (ANC). There have been many institutions named in his honour, including the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, the Sol Plaatje University, the Sol Plaatje Museum and Library and the Sol Plaatje Educational Trust.

ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS SOL PLAATJE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The Canon Collins Trust, partnered with the Sol Plaatje Educational Project, is inviting students to apply for the Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarship, for the 2025 academic year.

Scholarships will be awarded to exceptional students, to pursue Postgraduate (Masters and PhD) studies, in these areas:

  • Education Policy and Practice
  • Humanities (including Arts, Anthropology, History and Literature)
  • Justice (including Economics, Climate Justice, Law and Politics)

Top priority will be given to Climate Justice related studies – in science or applied science field (the application must be able to demonstrate relevance to climate justice related matters).
 

 

MORE ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS SOL PLAATJE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE, SERVICE CONTRACT & SELECTION

The Scholarship will be awarded to the value of between R20 000 and R100 000, depending on the students circumstances. Masters students will receive funding for up to 2 years and PhD students will receive funding for up to 3 years. Funding will be renewed based on satisfactory academic performance.

Scholarship recipients will be required to take part in annual conferences and various smaller events throughout the year.

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CANON COLLINS SOL PLAATJE SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a national or have refugee status in: South Africa, Namibia or Zimbabwe
  • You must reside in South Africa, Namibia or Zimbabwe
  • You must have completed a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or will complete your degree in 2024
  • You must be studying or intend on studying towards a Masters or PhD, in one of the areas listed above, in 2025
  • You must be studying or intend on studying on a full-time or part-time basis (distance learning may also be considered)
  • You must be studying or are applying to study at a university in South Africa

SELECTION FOR THE CANON COLLINS SOL PLAATJE SCHOLARSHIP

  • Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in October and November 2024.
  • All applicants will receive feedback on their application, via email, in December 2024.
  • Do not contact Canon Collins to follow up on the status of your application.
  • Shortlisted candidates will also be required to submit 2 letters of reference, relating to your suitability for the scholarship. One reference should be from a current or most recent academic supervisor and one from an employer. Applicants who have not been employed before, may submit a reference from a voluntary work, or two academic references. PhD students will also be required to submit a supporting statement from their supervisor.
