The Municipal Youth Graduate Programme is now open for applications. Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo, in partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), is offering 60 graduate opportunities for unemployed youth residing in the City of Johannesburg.This Municipal Youth Graduate Programme runs for a period of six (6) months and provides successful candidates with practical workplace exposure across various environmental and conservation-related departments.

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- M + 3 (Matric plus 3 years of study)
- Qualification with 360 credits or Degree/Diploma at NQF Level 6
- Youth aged between 18 – 35 years
- Applicants must reside within the City of Johannesburg

Departments and Allocation
Below is the breakdown of available positions and responsibilities under the Municipal Youth Graduate Programme:
1.Johannesburg Zoo (15 Interns)
Required Qualification:
Environmental Management and/or Conservation Management
Key Performance Areas:
- Cleaning animal enclosures
- Feeding animals
- Monitoring and observing animal behaviour
- Completing paperwork
- Environmental education and awareness
2.Environmental Education (8 Interns)
Required Qualification:
Environmental Management / Environmental Sciences
Key Performance Areas:
- Educating and raising awareness about environmental issues
- Planning commemorative events for environmental theme days
- Conducting outreach campaigns to schools and City residents
- Implementing curriculum-aligned educational programmes
- Supporting education centres and nature reserves
3.Project Management (2 Interns)
Required Qualification:
Project Management / Public Administration / Office Administration
Key Performance Areas:
- Project management support
- Communication and reporting
- Monitoring and evaluation
- Reception and office administration services
4.Protected Areas and Conservation (18 Interns)
Required Qualification:
Environmental Management and/or Conservation Management
Key Performance Areas:
- Alien plant control
- Trail maintenance
- Fence monitoring
- Koppies and ridges management
- Bird sanctuary management
- Dam and riverbank management
- Use of fire as a management tool
5.Integrated Catchment Management (5 Interns)
Required Qualification:
Environmental Management / Conservation / Water Resource Management / Hydrology
Key Performance Areas:
- Conservation and management of catchment areas
- Botanical gardens and nature reserve support
- Ecological management services
- Determining carrying capacity
- Wildlife management
- Management of aquatic and terrestrial alien plants
- Arboriculture, horticultural and herbarium services
6.Nursery Management (10 Interns)
Required Qualification:
Occupational Health and Safety / Environmental Management / Forestry Management
Key Performance Areas:
- Nursery management and plant propagation
- Conducting tree census
- Assisting with safety and health issues
- Supporting tree planting services across Johannesburg
7.Capital Infrastructure (2 Interns)
Required Qualification:
Environmental Management / Environmental Science
Key Performance Areas:
- Scoping and assessing development projects
- General project management
- Environmental management
- Monitoring and reporting

- The programme duration is strictly six months
- There is no guarantee of permanent employment
- Only applicants residing in the City of Johannesburg will be considered
