ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA (UP)
The University of Pretoria (UP) is one of the leading research-intensive institutions within the country and continent. This institution has gained global recognition for a number of reasons, namely: relevance, impact, quality, developing people, making a difference, and creating knowledge.
To maintain its status of being a leading institution, the UP upheld its vision by introducing the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship. The Centre is aimed at contributing to the growth of various research activities across a number of disciplines.
The Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship was created in 2013, with the aim of equipping young students with the knowledge required to progress within the community and society. The Centre provides students with a schooling environment that promotes ideas across various disciplinary boundaries, allows for the debating of new ideas, facilitates interaction between senior scholars, and acts as an intellectual home for senior scholars, post-Doctoral fellowship, and postgraduate students.
The work done at the Centre is performed in a setting where the outcome is be used to address vital social issues within a multidisciplinary perspective, with key focus on Humanities and Social Sciences.
ABOUT THE UP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The University of Pretoria (UP) is inviting students to apply for their Doctoral Research Scholarship, for the 2025 academic year.
Scholarships will be awarded for PhD studies at the University of Pretoria, to students pursuing studies that contribute to the strategic research areas of the Faculty in which they are registered or to which they are applying.
Successful applicants will be informed of their provisional award via email in early December 2024. If you do not receive any feedback, please consider your application unsuccessful.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE UP DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You may be a South African citizen or an international student
- You must be applying to study at the University of Pretoria on a full time basis and have been allocated a 2025 student number OR already registered as a full time student
- You must NOT already hold a Doctoral Degree
- You must have a project research title and the outline for the intended research for the PhD degree
- You must already have an identified Supervisor who will need to provide their input as well on the online application
- Your studies must contribute to the strategic research areas of the Faculty in which you are registered or to which they are applying
- You must have also applied for other external funding sources for the 2025 academic year (you must submit proof of this)
- You must demonstrate academic potential and be within the first three years of the PhD studies for the 2025 academic year
- You must be committed to completing your studies within the minimum period of three years
- You must NOT qualify for the UP-Staff Waiver
- You must NOT be working more than 12 hours per week if awarded these funds
- You must read and agree to the UP Doctoral Scholarship conditions (.pdf)
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE UP SCHOLARSHIP

Submit clear copies of the following documentation with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- South African ID or passport (if an international student)
- Past academic transcripts
- Proof that you are not employed for more than 12 hours per week at commencement of your Doctoral studies/ affidavit if unemployed
- Proof of application for other external funding sources for the 2025 academic year
