ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – GLOBELEQ
Globeleq, founded in 2002, is a global operating power company, as well as a power industry leader within the emerging markets. The company develop energy projects in the Americas and within Africa, by way of electric power sectors development.
Globeleq South Africa, operating in the country since 2012, is a Globeleq subsidiary company. Globeleq South Africa Management Services are responsible for the management of 3 power producing utility projects within the renewable energy sector of South Africa – these include the Droogfontein Solar Power; De Aar Solar Power and the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm. The projects are owned to a partnership with Eskom, the South African government, as well as other private sector developers, local communities, constructors, lenders, investors and suppliers.
The Globeleq Scholarship Fund (GSF) was launched in 2014 and is managed by Globeleq South Africa Management Services (GSAMS). The GSF has awarded more than R10.3 million in bursaries and scholarships, funded by GSAMS’ independent power producers (IPPs) and one of its shareholders, the Globeleq Educational Trust (GET).
ABOUT THE GLOBELEQ SCHOLARSHIPS – FIELDS COVERED
Globeleq is inviting students to apply for their scholarships programmes, for the 2025 academic year.
The Globeleq Scholarship Fund (GSF) has 4 types of scholarship awards available:
1) Globeleq GSF Engineering Sciences: this bursary will provide cover for studies within the following fields:
- Electrical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering (N3 – N6)
- Electrical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Mechatronic Engineering (National Diploma or BTech Degree)
- Electrical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Mechatronic Engineering (BEng or BSc degrees)
2) Globeleq GSF Other Sciences: this bursary will be awarded to students residing in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape, for studies within the following fields (Higher Certificates, Diplomas, Degrees or equivalent NQF-rated qualifications):
- Agriculture
- Education (Mathematics & Science)
- Nursing
3) Globeleq GSF Communities: this bursary will be awarded to students residing within 50km of specific wind farms/ solar farms, for Degree or Certificate studies in ANY field.
4) Globeleq Education Trust: this bursary will be awarded to students residing within 50km of specific wind farms/ solar farms, for Degree or Certificate studies in ANY field.
MORE ABOUT THE GLOBELEQ SCHOLARSHIPS – EXPENSES COVERED & SELECTION
Scholarships will provide cover for the following expenses: registration fees, tuition fees, books, stationary, accommodation and meals. Students will also receive other necessary academic support, if approved by GSF Committee.
Recipients of the Globeleq Engineering Scholarship Fund will be required to enter into a work-back agreement, after graduation.
All applicants will receive a confirmation email after their application has been received. Applicants will be notified if their application was unsuccessful. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GLOBELEQ SCHOLARSHIPS
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
1) Globeleq GSF Engineering Sciences:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must have completed Matric
- You must be studying full-time, towards one of the Engineering qualifications listed above
- You must be entering your 2nd or higher year of study in 2025 (excluding bridging courses or extended programmes)
- You must be studying at a recognised and accredited higher education institution in South Africa
- You must be interested in renewable energy
- You must be unemployed (not working full-time or part-time in 2025) and must not have worked full-time before 2025
2) Globeleq GSF Other Sciences:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must have been born in or reside within the Northern Cape or Eastern Cape province
- You must have completed Matric
- You must be studying towards an Education, Agriculture or Nursing qualification
- You must be entering 2nd or higher year of study in 2025
- You must be studying or intend on studying at a recognised and accredited higher education institution in South Africa
- You must be interested in renewable energy
- You must be unemployed (not working full-time or part-time in 2025) and must not have worked full-time before 2025
3) Globeleq Communities Scholarship Fund:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must reside within a 50km radius of any of the following: Aries Solar Power, Boshof Solar Power, De Aar Solar Power, Droogfontein Solar Power, Jeffrey’s Bay Wind Farm, Klipheuwel Wind Farm, Konkoonsies Solar Power, and Soutpan Solar Power (check the map to make sure you reside within the area)
- You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
- You must be studying or intend on studying full-time, towards a Degree or Certificate qualification in ANY field
- You must be entering 1st or higher year of study in 2025
- You must be studying or intend on studying at a recognised and accredited higher education institution in South Africa
- You must be interested in renewable energy
- You must be unemployed (not working full-time or part-time in 2025) and must not have worked full-time before 2025
4) Globeleq Education Trust:
- You must be a South African citizen

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE GLOBELEQ SCHOLARSHIPS

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- ID document (certified copy)
- Grade 11 final results AND all Matric results, if currently in Matric (certified copies)
- Proof of provisional university acceptance, if applicable (on tertiary letterhead)
- Matric certificate, if completed Matric (certified copy)
- Latest academic transcript, if currently studying at tertiary level (certified copy) (if you have studied at multiple institutions, combine all your transcripts into one document)
- Proof of university registration, if currently enrolled (on tertiary letterhead)
- Curriculum Vitae
- Statement briefly explaining why you chose your particular field of study and how you plan to use your qualification after graduation (1 page)
- Recommendation letter from someone who can attest to your personal character and/or your academic performance, with their contact details, NOT a family member or friend (1 page) (read our article on writing a recommendation letter for a bursary/ scholarship application)
- Parents or guardians proof of household income (latest payslips if employed/ affidavit if unemployed, SASSA grant if applicable)
- Students under 18: a completed and signed consent form by your parent or legal guardian
- Students under 18: parents or guardians ID documents (certified copies)
