ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – SASA
The South African Statistical Association (SASA) is a professional organization dedicated to promoting the study, application, and advancement of statistical science in South Africa. Established in 1953, SASA serves as a hub for statisticians, data scientists, researchers, and educators, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange across academic, governmental, and industrial sectors.
The association offers a platform for sharing cutting-edge research through conferences, publications, and workshops, while also encouraging the development of statistical education and practice. SASA plays a pivotal role in addressing data-driven challenges and supports the use of statistics to drive informed decision-making in South Africa and beyond.
ABOUT THE SASA BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The SASA Education Committee is inviting students to apply for the SASA Bursary Competition, for the 2025 academic year.
Bursaries will be awarded for studies within Statistics or Mathematical Statistics (3rd year or Honours level), to students who are SASA members (membership is FREE).
Bursaries will be awarded based on 2 main criteria: academic merit and financial need.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SASA BURSARY
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

- You must be studying towards a Statistics or Mathematical Statistics qualification
- You must be currently in your 2nd or 3rd year of study in 2024
- You must be entering 3rd year or Honours studies in 2025
- You must be studying at a recognised South African university
- You must be a SASA member or must apply for SASA membership (apply here for FREE student membership)

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- ID document/ passport (certified copy)
- Full academic record (certified copy)
- Motivational letter based on your financial need (read our tips)
- Proof of parents or guardians household income
- Proof of any existing student loan balance, if applicable
